Kate Carter (Daisy Edgar-Jones, Where the Crawdads Sing, 2022) works in Oklahoma with her storm chaser friends, Javi (Anthony Ramos, In the Heights, 2021), Addy (Kiernan Shipka), Praveen (Nik Dodani) and her boyfriend, Jeb (Daryl McCormack.)
They hope to launch barrels of sodium polyacrylate beads into a tornado to reduce its intensity and secure funding for further research. Then disaster strikes!
This is a sequel to Twister (1996) but the only direct connection (to the original) is early tornado warning system Dorothy.
Twisters feels like a made for streaming movie. The special effects are soulless and have little impact when compared to the groundbreaking original (dry twisters just don't have the same effect!) More rain, more hail and more lightning was needed to create excitement.
It's very talky but with very little character progression. Much ado.
Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick, 2022) is good as Tyler Owens, a famous YouTuber / storm chaser and meteorologist but he isn't given anything memorable to do.
Worth watching on a rainy day, but you shouldn't chase after it.
