In the run up to Thanksgiving, Adverting executive, Neal (Steve Martin) and shower curtain salesman, Del (John Candy) are stuck together on the road trip from hell in John Hughes classic comedy. One that practically demands repeat viewings.
This has to be one of the best comedies of the 1980's, with great (yet tragic) comedic situations and memorable dialogue throughout. We can all relate to the anything that can go wrong will go wrong situations. Screenwriter Hughes injects the film with lots of heart to go along with the purposely cringe worthy comedy.
Martin and Candy are superb, witness Neal (Martin) berating Del, Candy doesn't say a word but his facial expressions show us exactly how he's feeling. A masterclass in acting!
A giant trunk Del carries around becomes another character, but luggage unintentionally vanishes and reappears during the film! [Keep an eye out for it.]
The ending is a punch in the gut that you don't see coming, one that is equally heartbreaking and heartwarming. A true classic (with strong swearing, see Martin's F laden rant.)
"Wilma!"
