The Polar Express (2004)

On Christmas Eve, a cynical / Hero Boy (Tom Hanks) boards a magical train heading to the North Pole and Santa Claus's home. There he meets conductor Tom Hanks (yes, he also plays four other roles), a clever Hero Girl (Nona Gaye), a lonely boy called Billy (Peter Scolari) and a know-it-all boy (Eddie Deezen.)

The motion capture is a little dated (the technology has moved on since) but the animation that surrounds the characters is astounding! The runaway train sequences are absolutely jaw dropping – it's like having a snowy roller-coaster at home!

The song 'Hot Chocolate' is extremely catchy and the sweeping, grandiose camera shots are beautiful. The entire thing takes place in a winter wonderland that is glorious to behold.

It's suggested that the events of the film are a dream, but then something happens later on, which seems to confirm it isn't. Or does it? His dressing gown pocket rips twice! Thrilling.
