President of IBC Television, Frank Cross (Bill Murray) is overseeing rehearsals for a new live TV production of A Christmas Carol on Christmas Day. He is visited by his old boss, Lew (John Forsythe) who tells him that three Ghosts are coming to visit him.
As long as Murray's being mean, this is ingenious, with hilarious cutting dialogue and superb SFX for 1988. Carol Kane excels as the GOCpresent with a penchant for hitting Cross with inanimate objects.
The ending is a bit over-sentimental and things get a little silly in the booth with Eliot (Bobcat Goldthwait) but this is still tremendous fun.
Alfre Woodard is memorable as Grace Cooley, Frank's overworked assistant, who's son has remained mute since his father's death. John Glover is smarmy Brice Cummings (Frank's detestable foil) and Karen Allen is Frank's adorable old girlfriend, Claire Philips. David Johansen & Robert Mitchum co-star. Excellent.
