Newly single Iris, (Kate Winslet, as a society columnist for The Daily Telegraph), and Amanda (Cameron Diaz, as owner of a film trailer company in Los Angeles) swap homes for the holidays. Both ladies are heartbroken after being cheated on.
Iris ends up living in a big mansion in LA, while Amanda stays at a small, cosy, cottage in England. They embrace their new surroundings while also learning to love again (aw!) in good but predictable fashion.
Jude Law is likable as Iris's brother Graham, a book editor who stops by the cottage to visit his absent sister, and Jack Black is his usual charismatic self (in a mostly straight role) as Miles Dumont: a Hollywood film composer working with Amanda.
The cast elevates the material and stops The Holiday from being just another predictable (Hallmark type) rom-com. The highlight is a clever phone call between the four characters that escalates in hilarious fashion. Good.
