Carry-On (2024)

Netflix's Carry-On has early potential, mixing Die Hard 2 (1990) with both Phone Booth (2002) and Red Eye (2005), as ruthless caller Traveler (Jason Bateman) tells Ethan (Taron Egerton, as a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officer at Los Angeles International Airport) what to do, or he will kill his pregnant girlfriend (Sofia Carson.)

There is some suspense in the first hour that is sadly wasted as the film progresses, ending up as a generic action flick (with far too much going on.)

There would be cameras everywhere in the airport, and Traveler's baseball hat is hardly shielding his face. Bateman is fantastic but he's almost too likable to play this type of in-human role. Egerton is good as the every man caught up in the nightmare situation.

Despite the early promise, this ends up merely serviceable instead of the great action thriller it could have been. It should have stayed more grounded.
