A Christmas Story (1983)

Daydreamer, Ralphie (Peter Billingsley) dreams of owning a BB gun, but everyone he comes into contact with tells him he'll shoot his eye out. Including his mother (Melinda Dillon), his teacher and best of all a department store Santa Claus! [In the film's best scene.]

Ralphie and his friends play in the neighbourhood, while trying to avoid the local bully, Scut Farkus (Zack Ward.) They dare each other to do things, don't even mention the dreaded triple dog dare!

A Christmas Story is a realistic slice of life in 1940's America, with believable characters and memorable scenarios. Like in the television series The Wonder Years, the film benefits greatly from the narration of adult Ralphie (voiced by Jean Shepherd.) His memories of the time are wonderfully nostalgic and constantly hilarious.

Darren McGavin is good value as The Old Man (with the hideous - now iconic - leg shaped lamp.) Good fun.
