Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope (1977)

Farm boy Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), cocky Pilot Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Wookiee Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew) set out to rescue Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) from the villainous Empire and the vicious Darth Vader (David Prowse / James Earl Jones (voice.)

Leia has entrusted the plans for the Death Star (a colossal space station capable of destroying entire planets) to R2-D2's robotic system, hoping the Rebel Alliance get hold of them. Anthony Daniels plays Droid friend C3P0.

In 1977 Star Wars captured the public's imagination like no movie before, and the numerous imitations (and spin offs) have done nothing to dull its appeal. A merchandising juggernaut, with epic space (and Lightsaber) battles, memorable characters and a vast impressive galaxy. The John Williams score is iconic.

The special edition features 1990's CGI effects, some of which improve the movie (by making its world seem larger) and some which are already dated - more so than practical effects. The Han Solo / Jabba the Hutt scene was ill advised with a unconvincing tail step.

Alec Guinness is great as wise old Obi-Wan Kenobi (a Jedi master who helps Luke) while a brilliant Peter Cushing is the treacherous Grand Moff Tarkin. Unmissable.
