Lady on a Train (1945)

Nicki Collins (Deanna Durbin) witnesses a murder from her train carriage. When the police don't believe her, she decides to investigate herself, with the help of a mystery writer, Wayne Morgan (David Bruce.)

Nicki recognizes shipping magnate Josiah Waring, from a newsreel, as the murder victim. Unable to find the crime scene, she sneaks into Waring's mansion, where she is mistaken for Margo Martin (Waring's trophy fiancee.) His nephews, Arnold (Dan Duryea) and Jonathan (Ralph Bellamy) receive a pitiful $1 inheritance, but the bulk of the estate goes to Martin.

Durbin has expert comedic timing and she's in fine voice with the fantastic songs. The highlight sees her singing the festive classic, 'Silent Night' to her father on the phone, which is beautiful and Christmassy. The score is hauntingly memorable and the killer is well hidden.

A superb murder mystery with high romance and wonderful farce. One of Durbin's best.
