Father Christmas (1991)

Father Christmas takes place in the same universe as The Snowman (1982) and while not in that league, it's still a nice festive cartoon / short film.

We find out what Santa (Mel Smith) does the rest of the year, from doing household chores to going on holiday. When he's recognised, he quickly moves on.

Santa is quite gruff and his favourite word is 'blooming' which he uses frequently! It's blooming this and blooming that! But not in the American version. Father Christmas was re-voiced by William Dennis Hunt becoming much jollier, and the word "blooming" was replaced with "merry". Also removed were scenes of Father Christmas getting drunk, over-eating, dancing with chorus girls and suffering a hangover. His "builders' crack" and sitting on the toilet were also cut. Blooming heck!

Seek out the original version instead. It's charming and festive, and only a U certificate!

Here's to another Blooming Christmas!
