Gremlins (1984)

Keep him out of the light (sunlight will kill him), don't give him any water, and the most important rule, no matter how much he cries, no matter how much he begs, never feed him after midnight.”

Those are the rules as explained to Randall Peltzer (Hoyt Axton as an inventor who's inventions never work correctly) when he picks up a Mogwai named Gizmo (voiced by Howie Mandel) for his son's Christmas present. Of course son Billy (Zach Galligan) ends up breaking all of them and little furry monsters (with a penchant for violence and anarchy) are unleashed!

Gremlins is a smart black comedy, horror masterpiece, with memorable characters and well timed suspense. Calligan is great as the every man and (Phoebe) Cates is adorable as the 'girl next door.' The puppetry is excellent with 80's practical effects winning over modern CGI. Only the stop motion animated scene is slightly dated.

Kate's (Cates) speech about how she found out there was no Santa Claus is enough to put you off Christmas for good! The cinema / department store ending will have you on the edge of your seat, with thrilling action and gross Gremlin gore (alongside a dangerous chainsaw!) A young Corey Feldman co-stars.

An 80's festive classic. “Hi Ho Hi ho!”
