A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965)

This perennial favourite (wildly popular in the US) first appeared on CBS in 1965 and it's hardly dated a bit. The special has aired in America every Christmas season since.

The permanently put upon Charlie Brown (Oh brother!) just isn't feeling Christmas this year (Rats!) the winter blues have firmly set in. He hasn't received a single Christmas card, and just when we think his luck is going from bad to worse, Lucy offers him the chance to direct the school play (a good thing!) Along the way he buys a Christmas tree (that most people wouldn't give house room to), and learns the true meaning of Christmas.

The story is slight but entertaining and frequently funny. Lucy gets most of the best dialogue, “Ah! I've been kissed by a dog!” and referring to Beethoven, “have you ever seen his picture on a bubblegum card?” she asks, as she teases Schroeder. The captivating Jazzy score is a best seller. Excellent.
