John McClane (Bruce Willis), a NY cop, fights back against terrorists in an LA office building over Christmas.
Willis performance deservedly made him a huge star, with high physicality, great charisma and witty puns to spare. Alan Rickman plays one of the greatest screen baddies of all-time, Hans Gruber, the leader of the terrorists. A nasty piece of work, who doesn't just threaten to pull the trigger, he actually does it. “I'm gonna count to three, there won't be a four!”
The screenplay is sensational, witness the scene where Han and John come together. Han pretends to be an escaped hostage, does McClane know he's lying? It's nail-bitingly tense!
This is a compelling cat and mouse game with superb dialogue and great action-packed set pieces. Reginald VelJohnson is memorable as Sgt. Al Powell (John's confidant on the ground.) Contender for best action film ever made. Unmissable. Followed by 4 sequels.
