Apollo Creed (a brilliant Carl Weathers), the boxing world champion, gives an unknown fighter a shot at his title, that fighter is the Italian Stallion, Rocky Balboa (a phenomenal Sylvester Stallone.)
Rocky is iconic! There isn't much about this movie that isn't iconic, from the realistic training sequences to the inspiring score and the memorable characters.
If this was just a boxing movie then it wouldn't have stood the test of time, but Rocky is much more than that. It's the ultimate underdog story, a clever rom-com, and a realistic drama.
We care deeply about these characters because they seem so damn alive. Burgess Meredith is excellent as gruff old trainer, Mickey, Talia Shire is superb as shy pet shop worker / love interest, Adrian and Burt Young is fantastic as drunken layabout brother, Paulie.
The final scene is one of the greatest in motion picture history, providing sufficient feel good chills. The two lovers shout across a crowded auditorium, professing their deep love for one another, while not particularly caring about the result. “Adrian!”
