Prancer (1989)

In Prancer, nine-year-old Jessica (a brilliant Rebecca Harrell) nurses a fallen reindeer back to health. This holiday film is intelligent and realistic while also being heartwarming and Christmassy.

Sam Elliot is excellent as Jessica's overworked stressed out father, who should be spending more time with his children, but he can't see the wood for the trees. Cloris Leachman plays Mrs. McFarland, a female Scrooge who admonishes Jessica and friend Carol (Ariana Richards, Jurassic Park, 1993) for sleighing near her property.

Jessica works for McFarland in order to buy feed for the injured reindeer lying in her barn.

The beginning is very clever foreseeing events to come, and right up to the end Prancer never sells out. Did she imagine it? It doesn't matter, it's open to interpretation.

A Christmas film with brains as well as heart. Jessica has the courage. Worthy of anyone's favourite holiday movies.
