Illumination's Despicable Me owes a great debt to the Christmas classic Scrooge (1951.) Look at the similarities.
Its genius (yes genius!), lies in its superior story arc as supervillain Gru (Steve Carell, TV's The Office) goes from lonely depressed bachelor to caring father of three.
His army of yellow Minions are very funny, bringing back good old-fashioned slapstick, but without the human element, Agnes (Elsie Fisher), Margo (Miranda Cosgrove) and Edith (Dana Gaier), there is no film. Jason Segel (TV's HIMYM) provides fine support as nerdy supervillian Vector.
The roller coaster POV ride and the belated dance recital are great fun, while the animation is gorgeous. The Pharrell Williams soundtrack is excellent. Fisher steals the show as the adorable Agnes, in her quest for a fluffy unicorn. Watch out Disney and DreamWorks, Illumination are here to play!
