Dyslexic student Liam (a very good Robert Timothy Smith) sends a letter to Santa and accidentally addresses it to Satan, cue Jack Black who offers him three wishes (the genie stole it from him!) in exchange for his soul.
Liam's first wish is to attract the attention of his classmate crush, Emma (Kai Cech.)
As expected Jack Black steals every scene he's in, with his usual goofy hilarious antics. The film is uneven especially towards the end, with a twist that pushes things too far (it doesn't make logical sense), but up until then this is entertaining.
Brianne Howey and Hayes MacArthur are good as Liam's grieving, worried parents. Carson Baker is memorable as Gibby, Liam's best mate who has crooked teeth. Black's Tenacious D Bandmate, Kyle Gass cameos as a school teacher. Ben Stiller also cameos. Singer Post Malone appears as himself. Minor vulgarity (12 certificate.)
