Still Water (2021)

American, oil worker, Bill's daughter, Alison (Abigail Breslin) is in prison, in Marseille, for a crime she says she didn't commit. Her girlfriend has been stabbed to death. Bill (Matt Damon) goes to Marseille to investigate.

Don't expect a Taken style action thriller, this is different, more intelligent. Still Water remains engrossing and gripping throughout. It is however a slow burner, so if that's not your thing, well, maybe give it a chance anyway.

The film is memorable largely due to Bill's relationship with a French mother, Virginie (Camille Cottin), and her young daughter, Maya (Lilou Siauvaud.) Maya is adorable and oh so French! She teaches Bill how to speak French, and in return he teaches her English. Their developing father / daughter relationship is very sweet.

There is some violence and confrontation (but the movie never wallows in unpleasantness) and the scenes at the football game are intense.

This film is about second chances and making amends. The bittersweet ending sticks with you and the final words are quite powerful.
